Hope This Finds Me Well, 2021, short film directed by Alexander Zeke Musca, starring Duyi Han, music by Gilbert Cameron Evans

Ordinance of the Subconscious Treatment (心伺令) is a collection of neuroaesthetic objects and environments that investigates the themes of mental health and contemporary Chinese culture. Each room is a manifestation of a mental state. Intended to be both provoking and hypnotic, intimidating and soothing, the rooms and objects interweave religious and folkloric references with scientific and narrative cues informed by contemporary mental health practices.

The silk embroidery features not religious iconography or inscriptions but chemical symbols such as dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin, and various phrases. The wide-ranging sentiments and cultural references are all connected: they are a reflection on the belief systems people have today and the sense of what brings happiness.

Together, the curation of aesthetic elements in the whole project plays with the psychological tension between fear and love, authority and empathy, eeriness and familiarity, sublime and ordinary, psychedelic and sober, pain and healing, conflict and conciliation, brutality and subtlety, control and disorganization, illusion and reality, fullness and emptiness. The rooms and furniture confront, intimidate, confuse, hypnotize, provoke, embrace, soothe, or heal the visitor.

“Oxytocin” drawer cabinet

 “Dopamine” floor lamp

Inspired by Taoist talisman, the embroidery depicts the chemical symbol of dopamine and Billie Eilish lyrics and reflects a mental attitude of contemporary people towards health and happiness.

“Serotonin-Sertraline” floor lamp

The work juxtaposes functional and decorative elements in Chinese Buddhist temples: crown, parasol, and draping banners. The silk embroidery features questions asked during a therapist conversation, and chemical symbols of serotonin (related to happiness) and sertraline (an antidepressant).

Embroidery text translation:

Which emotions do you feel and why do you have these emotions?

So do you want to call and chat now or do you want to spend some time alone?

So have you done each thing on the checklist and are these things satisfactory?

How do you each feel? If you feel not satisfied, why?

What were you thinking at the time and what did you do in the end?

Did you do something you don’t want to do and did you ask the other person to do something you actually don’t care about?

Is the decision you made based on your state at the time that suits you?

What factors led to your decision at the time and how do you make a better decision next time?

If you don’t consider external conditions, what is the state you want?

Is the choice you made because of what you want or what feels more appropriate?
